Audacity

Ah, it must be Monday again and, ensconced in my comfy thinking chair, I thought it would be a good time to share a few practical tips on using audio in lessons.
Firstly, if you haven’t already done so, investigate the wonderful computer program, called Audacity. Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing [...]

Stuck for a rhyme?

Occasionally, students (and myself) get stuck for a rhyme. Of course, I do have a rather lovely little rhyming dictionary in my classroom but I should have guessed that by now the internet would have another answer. Click the image to give it a go.

Another one to add to your bookmarks.

Come over to our place

It is up and running at last! What? Sheesh, where have you been? – The English Teaching Space that’s what. Yes, I know, I know – a) I need to calm down and b) explain.

The English Teaching Space is a new website for teachers of English in Schools. It is supported by the [...]

Flash or what?

Looking for new interactive resources for the classroom can be fun but can also take a great deal of ‘Googling’. Here are a few I’ve found recently that might save you a bit of time.
The first site is stuffed with excellent resources for English and Maths (among others) from the fertile mind of Stewart Davis [...]

Not in search of things that go ‘bing’ (really)

There is no doubt that students respond very well to ICT based activities especially those that involve sound, novelty and a degree of challange. Whilst trawling the internet for something completely unrelated (ain’t that always the way!), I happened across this site.

It contains lessons, web-based resources and interactive student materials related to the IRA/NCTE Standards [...]

Finding photos

Most teachers looking for images would probably turn first to Google Image but there is a new method that might be a lot easier. Flickr Storm, an offshoot of the well known photo-hosting site, makes finding pictures a joy.

It gives you a simple search with the ability to filter by type of licence and then [...]

Teacher Tube and Thinking Blocks

Yes, teachers need no longer be left out of the ‘YouTube’ video revolution: we have our own version of the site with videos specific to education. Some of these are very useful indeed and some are also hilarious. Have a look at Mrs Burk, the rapping maths teacher for a start!

Yet more resources

Apparently the Times Educational Supplement has bits that you can read too! The online version also has some excellent resources that you can download for free although you will have to register with the site. Fortunately registration is free too.

Sound effects

Here’s a wonderful resource for teachers looking for sound effects. The site is easy to access especially if you use the tag cloud (found in the search box). All very handy for those media projects although you will have to create a login in order to download sounds.

Or you could try the sound search engine [...]

Help with Photostory 3

On this site is a comprehensive guide to using Microsoft’s excellent Photostory 3. It is also a great read if you are looking to explore the uses of Flickr with your students – amazing work Jake!
